Mighty Cockroach

Cockroaches are among the most resilient pests in the insect kingdom.  They seem to come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.  They're creepy, crawly, and a formidable opponent for anyone trying to exterminate them.  That's why they will be around a long time when we (humans) are gone.

Why Them, Not Us?

It is believed that the number one way we humans will cease to inhabit this world is Nuclear War.  Nations stockpile their own reserves, research ways to make them more powerful, and some have even gone missing!
The threat looms over our heads everyday, most people living in ignorance which is probably for the best.  But Apocalypse theories aside, what will remain when the dust settles?  A very good question in deed.  After the Nuclear Fallout dissipates, plant life will cease to be, along with humans.  This will pave the way for the next world players to take center stage.

What sets them apart?  We are their masters, despite how hard they are to kill sometimes, but that's just it.  They are resilient in more ways than one.

Fallout Frenzy

Among the resilient traits of Cockroaches, radiation is the most important.  It is a human weakness that plays on cell division.
The average person's cells divide millions of times per day, budding off and dying and leaving new ones to take its place.  When radiation takes hold, it is spread so quickly and effectively it wreaks havoc on a cellular level, leaving us hardly any tools to combat its effects.  In the event of a nuclear war, it would be the human cells that do us in.  The Cockroach can do us ONE better.

Not only are Cockroaches able to survive up to 15 times the lethal doses of radiation than Humans, but they have one unique attribute. Molting.

Whereas the Human body divides cells millions of times a day, the cockroach divides cells only once during its molting period, leaving it less susceptible to the effects of Radiation. Quite Unique.

In Humans EVERYONE's cells divide. No matter who you are, where you're at, or what you're doing they are always dividing. Since a cockroach only molts about once a week, it would leave the population of them, as a whole, less vulnerable and therefore able to maintain their population numbers extremely high.
Cockroaches have been around for millions of years, and will continue to do so until there is no longer a planet for them to walk on.
